Description

Limited knowledge exists regarding injury risk and pattern for World Cup athletes within the Nordic disciplines ski jumping, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined. We have only found one study from ski jumping and this is over twenty years old. We do not know of any studies from cross-country skiing or Nordic Combined.

The aim of this study is therefore to describe the injury risk and pattern to World Cup ski jumpers, Nordic combined athletes and cross-country skiers.

Method

Retrospective interviews with FIS World Cup athletes from nine selected nations were conducted towards the season endings of the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons in ski jumping, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined. The Europe Cup is the highest level for ski jumping, women and we performed the interviews here towards the end of the 2007-08 and 2008-09 winter season. There are only male participants in Nordic combined.

The interviews were based on a week-by-week schedule of the World Cup program. All acute injuries were recorded with information on body part, injury type, severity, as well as the specific diagnosis. For athletes not present at the interviews, their coach, team physician or physiotherapist were interviewed instead.

This project is part of the FIS Injury Surveillance System FIS ISS.

This study will increase our knowledge of injuries to World Cup athletes in the Nordic disciplines; ski jumping, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined.
