Description
The anatomy and biomechanics of the ACL is almost identical to tendons. It is only logical to assume that the ACL is subjected to the same degenerative processes found in tendons.
Approximately 1 out of 3000 suffers a ruptured ACL. It is firstly the young athlete that is affected. There is no evidence that reconstruction of the ACL will reduce the ongoing arthrosis. It is therefore important to dedicate resources to primary prophylaxis. If there is found degenerative changes in the ruptured ACL, intervention is possible.
The aim of the study is to investigate whether there is degenerative changes in the ACL before rupture.
Pilot study
Firstly 10 patients will be included in a pilot study. Patients with a clinical acute ACL rupture will undergo arthroscopy within 24 hours. Blood is aspirated from the joint, and the ruptured ACL is removed and sent for histopathological analysis.
